How battery expertise and system engineering became an integrated group.
The ebs group was formed in 2024 from the merger of two companies, each with over 15 years of experience. Battery and energy storage expertise from Dornbirn. Embedded and safety engineering from Hamburg and Kiel.
The roots: pioneering battery work since 1995.
The story begins in Dornbirn. In 1995, a battery company was founded there, which established itself over the years in the development, production and sale of batteries and energy storage systems.
In 2019, the spin-off e.battery systems - now e.bs AG - was created. Since then, the company has been developing customized battery and energy storage solutions that combine performance, sustainability and technological depth.

The other side: engineering depth since 2009.
At the same time, a different kind of expertise emerged in Hamburg. kumkeo GmbH was founded as a specialized engineering service provider for safety-critical, embedded systems - with a focus on FPGA design, real-time architectures and standard-compliant system development.
Over more than 15 years, the know-how grew along the strictest requirements of the industry: medical technology, defense, industrial control systems. The result was, among other things, the ELMAR Realtime Framework - a proprietary platform for functional safety and deterministic system behavior.
Kumkeo brought something to the table that pure hardware manufacturers rarely have: the expertise not only to build systems, but also to certify them in accordance with standards and operate them safely.

The turning point: strategic expansion in 2024.
In 2024, kumkeo GmbH from Hamburg was acquired by the ebs group. This merger created more than the sum of its parts:
- Dornbirn brings battery and energy systems, power electronics and real-time control
- Hamburg/Kiel bring embedded engineering, FPGA design, safety expertise and standards competence
Why this step was necessary.
Modern systems are no longer isolated components. They are complex architectures with requirements for real-time, safety, standard compliance and operation. A battery manufacturer can build batteries. An engineering service provider can develop systems. But only an integrated company can assume responsibility across all levels - from the system architecture to the energy system in operation.
The ebs group today: three divisions, one system approach.
Engineering
(ENG)
ENG develops electronic and software-based systems for applications with the highest requirements in terms of functional safety, conformity to standards and service life.

The result: consistent responsibility.
Customers do not receive individual components, but functioning complete systems from a single source - with clear interfaces, deterministic behavior and shorter development times.
